UFCW Local 401 has already helped workers at G4S

Wow!!!  On May 22, 2012, the Company announced that G4S employees will be receiving a $4/hour wage increase, including back pay from January 1, 2012. This is excellent news, but this is not done out of the goodness of their heart! UFCW Local 401 is excited that G4S is recognizing the hard work of its employees through a pay raise which we believe to be a direct result of our presence in G4S. In an effort to prevent the unionization of their workers, companies will often hand out short term rewards, such as raises or other benefits with the objective of temporarily satisfying the workers. G4S is such an employer, and their new found desire to pay their workers a more reasonable wage appears to be just such an approach.

With the union certification of United Protection Services and Securitas guards, and with the continued support of Unions at worksites across the Oil Sands region, G4S is bound to be feeling the pressure of increasing industry standards.  As more workers want the benefits offered by Unions, the harder it becomes for non-unionized companies operating in the same industry to deny the same conditions to their workers.  The Company believes that by giving G4S employees this wage increase they can prevent them from unionizing.  However, we all know that there is a lot more to a job then just getting paid.

The workplace environment can have a powerful impact on a worker’s sense of satisfaction at their job.  UFCW Local 401 has been hearing directly from the workers at G4S that they are experiencing unfair working conditions in regards to favoritism, overtime pay, and distribution of work hours. Although financial issues can persuade some workers to put up with a certain degree of poor working conditions, this is only a temporary fix.  In the long run, this raise will not make up for the lack of respect and proper treatment at the workplace.

Without the protection of a Union, the Company can take away the pay raise just as easily as they gave it. That’s why UFCW Local 401 negotiates for legally binding agreements in the form of Union Contracts.  These contracts protect not only the conditions of your pay, but also the security of your job, and the welfare of your work environment.  With Local 401 we aim to raise the industry standard for all security guards, so that everyone benefits. Let’s keep the fight alive, not only for wages, but for a better working environment as well.  All workers deserve a safe and enjoyable place to work and UFCW Local 401 can be there to help get you what you deserve.
