Temporary Foreign Workers Rights for Security Guards

Making It Permanently Right for Temporary Workers. We know you came to Alberta to work hard and build a better life for you and your family.Has it worked out that way? Is Canada the place you thought it would be, where workers have rights, and what you get in pay and housing is what you were promised?

If your answer is "NO", that's because Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) in Canada who don't belong to a union are the most vulnerable, exploited workers in the country.

You don't have to accept that. In Canada every worker is supposed to be equal when it comes to things like job safety, training, overtime, and protection from abuse.  That is the law. But unless you know your rights and there is someone backing you up, getting treated fairly as a TFW is almost impossible.

We can make it possible. We are UFCW Local 401. We are the largest private-sector union in Alberta with the strength of more than 30,000 members working in all kinds of jobs across Alberta: at packing plants, grocery stores, nursing homes, hotels, oil sands camps, security guard companies, restaurants, hospitals and lots of other places.

Just like you, some of our Local 401 members are TFW's, but the level of respect and pay they get is much better than TFW's in Alberta who don't have a union.

Why? Well for one, when you are a union member, you get paid the same as the Canadian working next to you. Pay discrimination is not allowed under your union contract. That is the contact that covers every member at a Local 401. It also explains exactly how much you'll paid including overtime and benefits; when your breaks take place; the schedule you'll be working; and how many holidays you get.

Your UFCW Local 401 union contract also means you can't be fired, disciplined or sent back home without a fair hearing first, and we will be there to defend you.  We're also there for you if your employer doesn't keep their promises when it comes to things like pay, working conditions, and decent living accommodations.

As a member of Local 401, your employer can't cheat or threaten you.  You don't have to work in fear that you will have your LMO cancelled if you raise a concern about safety, housing racism or harassment. You have the same labour and human rights as all workers in Canada. Your rights must be respected and as your union we make sure of it.

We want you to succeed and we are there to make it happen. Whether you need English-as-a-Second-Language training, settlement services, help with medical insurance or immigration forms, or just someone to talk to about the sadness of being far away from home —UFCW is there for you. We're very familiar with the problems facing TFW's — and have experienced professional union representatives across Alberta to protect your rights and future in Canada.

As a member of Local 401, you and your family members also have access at-no-charge to webCampus with the freedom to learn, absolutely free from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. webCampus is a state-of-the-art online learning academy with over 100 courses to choose from to improve your job skills, learn new skills, and even earn college credits.

As a TFW who is a member of Local 401, you also have access to the UFCW Canada Migrant Workers Scholarship program which provides 20 scholarships of $500 annually to the children or other family members of TFWs to go to school in their home countries.

To contact Local 401 about the benefits of membership please click on “Take Control Of Your Future” on the bottom of the page. All contact is confidential.  Your employer will never know you have contacted the union.

You work hard. You have sacrificed. You deserve the same rights and opportunities as all Canadian workers. Make it happen as a member of UFCW Canada Local 401.
